Democracy is never free; once it’s gone, it’s gone for good.

Last month I visited the Normandy beaches and the American Cemetery at Coleville-sur-Mer for the first time since I was stationed at the American Embassy in Paris during my military career.

As I stood among the graves of the 9,387 Americans resting there, it came home to me, once again, how much the concept of American democracy has meant to the world and the sacrifices Americans made to bring democracy back to Europe and to help maintain it for the past four generations.

DVEN is proud to be part of the Vet The Vote program, providing veterans the opportunity to serve as poll workers.

As we know from the news, democracy is under pressure around the world.  In the arc of human history, democracy occupies just a sliver of time.  We can’t afford to let it slip away.

America’s veteran community can play a key role in keeping America’s democratic traditions strong for America and democracy around the world.
